Benefits of Ultrasound-Guided Regional Anesthesia for Multimodal Analgesia

This article presents an overview of the clinical and economic benefits of ultrasound-guided regional anesthesia (UGRA). The article draws on published data and the experiences of Richard Teames, MD while developing and implementing a UGRA, opioid-sparing multimodal pain protocol at John Peter Smith Hospital (JPS) in Fort Worth, Texas, a level 1 trauma center.

Since the October 2018 launch of the UGRA program, JPS Hospital has seen:

  • Improvements to the safety, comfort, and quality of care for surgical patients

  • Substantial reductions in opioid usage and readmissions for pain control

  • Estimated cost savings of $4.4 million USD in the program’s first two years, as a result of significant decreases in the average length of stay (LOS) for patients undergoing a range of procedures

  • Decreases in the need for general anesthesia (GA) and aerosol-generating procedures, such as intubation and extubation, for patients with COVID-19

Results from case studies are not predictive of results in other cases. Results in other cases may vary.
