ASSESSING CARDIAC FUNCTION IN THE PERIOPERATIVE PATIENT

The Focus Assessed Transthoracic Echo (FATE) exam is used by Acute Care physicians all the time, but its use in perioperative anesthetics is relatively new.

Why would you, as an anesthesiologist, perform a FATE exam on a perioperative patient? A FATE exam can help you:

  • Identify irregular cardiac activity or unknown cardiopulmonary pathology

  • Diagnose pericardial effusion or tamponade

  • Estimate left ventricular function

  • Hemodynamic monitoring and volume assessment

Adding the FATE protocol to your perioperative routine can help diagnose and prevent serious cardiac events in the perioperative patient. Reduced complications can help streamline patient care and improve post-op outcomes.

What ultrasound systems and transducers should you use?

Sonosite PX and Sonosite X-Porte ultrasound systems, along with a phased array transducer, are recommended for cardiac scanning because of their image clarity and enhanced cardiac calculation packages.
